Aliens!! Head for the Pecos!!

A slow start to our riding day, we needed to search out a couple of pieces of equipment.  We located a charger for Linda's camera nice and cheap at Walmart and got our on-the-road data sorted.
Roswell really plays up the Aliens theme with little green man sculptures everywhere.  These two shots taken just at our motel and every other place the same.

Well we couldn't be here without taking in the UFO museum.  An old theatre converted has all the available info on "The Roswell Incident" gathered in to one place, along with a lot of other UFO memorabilia.  It was reasonably balanced, showing how many of the photos we see are mistaken interpretations of anomalies or outright fraud.

Finally on the road after midday we knew we wouldn't get far.  But the highway was made for fast travel and at the posted 70mph (110kph) we were overtaken a lot.
After a slightly wet ride through Carlsbad, the highway reverted to just two lanes and on into Texas.
Wide open roads

The weather theme for the day was HOT.  100F most of the time, the odd rainstorm bringing it down a bit until out the other side.  They were a relief more than a hindrance and we didn't even bother with wet gear.  We did have to put Linda's camera away though.  Charleen doesn't want to ruin too many cameras this holiday.
We finally called it quits in Pecos, TX at around 3pm and sought out digs.  First motel didn't have any spare non-smoking rooms, second didn't have any rooms at all but directed us to their next-door partners who did.  It is a very nice Best Western.
We had tea in their restaurant, a separate building, and were about to return to digs when a huge storm hit the town.  Lightning, thunder and howling wind.  We turned around and hid back in the restaurant and had another beer while we waited it out. Staff said this often happens and will be over in 15 minutes or so.  They were right.

Only 181 miles for the afternoon and an early night due to a blackout from the storm.

  2. Great to see you're visiting all the famous locations. Must be a buzz! I've read elsewhere that even the locals have trouble with servos once they leave their own town. Security seems to be a major issue. I only read this week of the hundreds of "drive-offs" there are every month in Qld. I wouldn't be a retailer anywhere for quids (thought I'd toss in a bit of Oz culture to keep you current).
