A Day Off

Sunday was a day of rest.  Or so they say.

We decided to have a good sleep in after the previous day's NYC madness.   Naturally I woke up bright and early and couldn't get back to sleep, so caught up with stuff online.

Then we went for a nice breakfast at a local diner and found a laundromat next door.  Out with the washing and get it done.

We listen to several podcasts and one of our favourites is by a musician who lives nearby. Named George Hrab, he does the Geologic Podcast (not about geology).  He is also a member of a band called the Philadelphia Funk Authority.  We have heard lots of their music and thought it would be nice to see them live if we were ever in the area.  It so happened that tonight, they were scheduled to do an open-air concert for the Liberty Day celebrations.  Great chance for us, so here we were.

We went for a short ride and walk around the towns either side of the Delaware River while we waited for the evening.
The Free Bridge - the next one along the river is tolled.
Easton, Philadelphia on the west side, Phillipsburg, New Jersey on the east side.

A couple of rail bridges in Phillipsburg.  The far one disused.

Monuments abound.  Some of these are quite old.
The street had been closed off and there were vendors everywhere.  We went to a bar nearby that was owned by ex-boxer Larry Holmes, had a couple of drinks to cool off on this hot afternoon. Then we sampled some of the street food and watched over where the Lehigh River joined the Delaware River.  A very pretty area.
So the band was just setting up as we wandered over to take a look, but everyone was looking at the sky.  It was coming over dark and threatening to storm.  Check of the radar showed storms coming.
It began to rain and the band began to put everything away.  No concert tonight.

Under threatening skies, the equipment gets packed away.
George is the hairless one.
So all we could do was go over to say hi to George and help pack away where we could help.  It did work out though to give us an hour or so chatting with George.  Top bloke and more than happy to spend some time with a couple of Aussie fans.

We had a slightly wet ride back to our digs, but in the heat, it was quite pleasant.
