Day 21 - No Moose but Lobster

Foggy cool start to the day.  The towns around here are very moose oriented. Moose statues, moose photos, beware of moose signs.  But as we haven't seen any evidence of actual moose, we are of the opinion they're a bit like Thylacines - here some time ago, now living on local legend.

We pulled up in Bethel to fuel up and checked Karen's intended path for us.  She was trying to get us to the highway in the straightest line possible.  This meant ignoring the minor highway and taking us on a number of farm roads.  We gave her a new via point to focus on and she came around to our way of thinking.   In making the corrections we found  the Crossroads Diner.  They had a photograph of  the world's largest SnowWoman at 122 feet 1 inch.  She was created in February 2008.

We traveled by some nice rivers
and even gave the BeigeMobile a bit of a tub
We chose to use a minor highway that would eventually run parallel with Interstate 95.  Karen was trying desperately to direct us to the interstate and we duly ignored her until we needed her help to find a particular shop in Bangor.  Success!  We were in Kohl's just before 1pm.  Over the PA we were advised that the staff would be stopping for a minute of remembrance at one o'clock and all shoppers were invited to do the same.  No problem at all.  At the appointed time, everyone stopped what they we doing.  The store was incredibly silent.  Our minute finished with a simple thank you over the PA.

Purchases made, it was time for a coffee.  We found the local Starbucks which was packed with students making use of the free WiFi.

We decided to head for Bar Harbor for the night.  We cruised around the area before deciding on our accommodation.  We have a room that looks out over the water.  It's not one of the  more, luxurious places, but it does have a good view.

There is a cruise ship in the harbor and the local shops had welcome signs inviting the ship's passengers to shop here for a discount.  Wonder if that applies to us, too?  We will have a look around tomorrow morning before heading out.
The Enchantment of the Seas.  It pulled out soon after.
Maine is famous for lobster.  All the way in to Bay Harbor there were any number of lobster pounds (eateries).  Being that we love seafood, I expect we'll be looking for a local lobster pound to sample the local product.  Might need a cold beer to wash it down, too.

Turns out there is a restaurant nearby that specializes in, guess what.  They were very understaffed but eventually we had a very lovely lobster meal.  Topped it off with chocolate mousse.  At least we know that exists.  They even had their own brews on tap so we had a couple of those each as well.  Two pints is a large amount for Charleen and so it was a very quick return to our room once we got out into the cool night air.

  2. Sadly no Jack. We saw a couple of places but wrong time of day. And the right time - no places.
    Had more lobster though...
