However that was not to be. The open part of the road was only a few miles into the park and not much elevation at all. However there were some nice photos to be taken of the lake and the whitewater creek rushing out of the mountains.
After that we had an early lunch then set out for Butte. I picked out a not so well used road, Hwy 83, to stay away from the main traffic. Turned out it was a reasonable road through deer infested forest. We saw a few. One casually walked out in front of us - in the middle of a town!
After a while the country opened out to wide areas of cattle farming land. All very pretty and, at the moment at least, very lush.
Rain. We have been rained upon almost every day. Only in Canada were we spared. Today it was the last 50 miles into Butte. Two storms, one we drove through without worries, and the second hit us as we got in to town. So camping was again forgotten as we headed for the nearest Super8 and took a dry room. Naturally, the rain stopped just as we settled in. Such is life.
Tomorrow we begin our trek south to meet up with the AWRA riders in LA and Jack will head home for a couple of weeks.
So next week, we will probably be complaining about the heat rather than the rain.

Road that gets icy is permanently scarified
Wide open spaces of Montana. Prettiest state we have visited so far.
