Hot FarRide to a Margarita - 620 miles

We set the alarm for 4.00am to get a good start on the day as we had a long way to go. In the dark it was 72F and quite comfortable. Almost no traffic on good road.

We got to Gallup in good time and pulled in for a fillup. First problem of the day. Credit card was missing from the wallet. We paid for fuel with another card then placed an urgent call to Jack to turn his house - at least the room we were in - upside down. Nothing. Thinking back, last use was for the brake pads and that shop didn't open for two hours. Nothing to do but ride on.

We called in to the Meteorite Crater site to have a look. This crater is a well preserved example of a meteorite crater, being only about 50,000 years old. Not as big as Wolfe Creek of Gosse Bluff back home, but impressive nevertheless.

While here, we got info that our card was at the shop and Jack would be able to pick it up. We eventually got him to overnight it to us in Vegas as working on just credit cards would prove to be difficult.

Next fuelup and brunch in Flagstaff and then we took the old Route66 run through Seligman and through to Kingman.

By now the day was starting to heat up and we were running in the high nineties. We turned northwest and headed for Hoover Dam and the Nevada border. For some strange reason we seem to be entering Nevada a lot. This was our fifth time so far. And by far the slowest.

They are building a huge bridge to fly - almost literally - over the Hoover Dam area, and a good thing too. There was some kind of delay and it took us three quarters of an hour to negotiate the run down to the dam and back up the other side. Hot and slow going.

Things didn't improve, heat wise, as we neared Las Vegas and with a lot of new roads being built, our old 2007 maps were a bit behind the time. The GPS requested we make a left turn where no left turn existed. We did a right+U turn but did no good and headed off the wrong way. After a 20 minute tour around the city we finally arrived at our hotel - South Point - with 109F reading on the dash.

We checked in and collapsed in to our room.

Then it was register for TAM7 conference and attend a reception where we met quite a few friends we only know from the internet and podcasts.

We also got the weekend's itinerary. This is going to be a busy weekend.

Some Pics:-

We went through some early rain and the result was this rainbow at sunrise - with moon.

Moon over rocky hills

Arizona's Meteor Crater.

A meteorite fragment. Solid metal.

Old Seligman's souvenir stores are still there

We saw a few of these in Arizonas. Even saw one taking a photo of a car that zoomed by us.

New bridge being built over Hoover Dam

Hot Stuff - it got to 109F before we finished.
