Rain Wrecks Museums - 333 miles

So much for the first night back under canvas - or nylon. It rained and it was cold. And my head cold, which was nearly gone, is nearly back.
Woke up to light drizzle and we packed up and got under way. It took quite a while to find a brekky cafe, but finally one appeared in view.
All fed, we had a fairly unspectacular ride through the rain across the lower eastern half of Lake Superior.
Finally we reached Whitefish Bay and made our way north to Whitefish Point where we visited the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. It appears that there have been many shipwrecks on the Great Lakes, most of them on Superior and most of them around Whitefish Point. Mainly due to a concentration of shipping in a small area, combined with unpredictable storms coming from the large lake. Thus, many of the wrecks were due to collisions.

One of the most famous ones wasn't, that of the Edmund Fitzgerald in November 1975 when, as the song says, the Gales came early.

We even got to speak to a gentleman who was on the ship following the Fitzgerald on that fateful night, Bill Moki, who now spends his retirement days working at the museum. Lovely fellow, likes to chat and is up with all the best known evidence upon the wreck which has had some controversial aspects.

After that we made our way south to St Ignace for a nice motel and an even better fish dinner.

Due to the weather, there weren't many photos today - Sorry Mum.

Lake Superior - calm under leaden skies

Good cafe - the local sheriff eats here. Pretty sneaky paint job.

Whitefish Point light - part of the museum

Whitefish Point beach.

Will swap yarns about 'orrible motels when you get back. Loved the mid west canyon country. Will you visit Flushing and Colon in Michigan? Had a friend who taught in both towns years ago. Cool here in Sydney.
